Who runs and supervises the program?
This program is planned, run, and supervised by Computech and Gaston teachers and Aquatics Coaches Mr. Vinson and Mr. Bernyk. High school students with Lifeguard certification help facilitate teams and activities.
Can you tell me about safety?
Safety is our primary concern. Please contact either of us if you have any questions about safety. The in-water sessions are held at the Edison High School Pool, just north of Computech's Gym.
What does a typical session look like?
Sessions include skill building and education, the core "lifeguard" part of the program, including water safety and rescue, first aid and CPR, and water-based fitness. Also included team-building and competitions, including "Iron-guard" events, which are fun age-appropriate competitions that might include running, swimming or paddling, teading water, and a retrieval task. Sessions end with hot chocolate and an opportunity for students to grab an after-school snack, if desired.
How much does the program cost?
The entire program is funded by Gaston and Computech, and as such, there is no cost to your family.
What is the time for the program each day?
The program starts immediately after school. Students will be dismissed in time to change and catch the 4:40 Edison Activity bus routes, be picked up, or return to the Computech ASES program.
Is my student ready?
If your student can swim, then yes. If not, still signup! A coach will work to schedule swim lessons that work for you and your student so they can be ready for Junior Lifeguard, and swim team in the spring.
Will my student earn Lifeguard certification?
No, at least not yet. Although much of the content remains the same, students must be 15 to earn lifeguard certification. Students who return to assist in leading the program in high school are given the opportunity to earn Red Cross lifeguard certification through additional coursework and requirements.
Can my parent pick me up after the program is over each day?
Yes. Adults approved to pick you up can do so up from the Edison Pool at 4:45 PM. There is no return to Gaston.
